Privacy Policy

The short version: page views are counted, you can turn that off in one click, and there is no advertising or profiling here at all. The longer version explains where your data does go.

Last updated 5 October 2026

In one paragraph. transversewaves.com is an educational website with no accounts, no logins, no shopping and no advertising. Google Analytics 4 runs from the moment a page loads, to count page views, and it sets two cookies in order to do that. A notice says so on your first interaction, and one click on "Opt out" stops it and deletes those cookies — for good, on this browser. Your browser also contacts Google Fonts for the typefaces, our host keeps standard server logs, and the contact form delivers through Resend. If you write to us, we have your message. That is the whole picture.

Who we are

This policy covers the website at transversewaves.com and all its pages. For any privacy question, or to exercise any of the rights below, write to info@transversewaves.com.

What we do not do

It is quicker to start here, because the list is unusually long for a modern website. We do not:

  • set any cookie beyond the two Google Analytics uses to count visits — no others, from anyone;
  • embed advertising, retargeting pixels or social media trackers;
  • allow Google to use analytics data for advertising or personalisation — those signals are switched off explicitly;
  • ask you to create an account, and we have no way for you to do so;
  • operate a mailing list or send marketing email;
  • sell, rent or share personal data with anyone.

Cookies and how to switch them off

Google Analytics 4 loads with the page and sets two cookies — _ga and _ga_<id> — which exist to tell a returning visit from a new one so that a visitor is not counted twice. They expire after about two years, or sooner if you clear them. These are the only cookies this site is responsible for. We are telling you plainly that they are set before you are asked, rather than describing an opt-in that does not exist.

A notice appears on your first interaction with the page saying this, with an Opt out button. Pressing it switches analytics off using Google's own ga-disable flag, expires both cookies immediately, and remembers the choice, so nothing is loaded on any later visit either. Nothing further is sent from the moment you press it.

Your choice itself is stored in your browser's localStorage under the key tw-consent. It never leaves your device and is not readable by us. Clearing this site's data resets it, and the notice will appear again.

If you are in the UK or EU and would rather nothing at all ran before you were asked, press Opt out once and nothing will. Browser-level tracker blocking and "Do Not Track" settings also work normally here — none of this is designed to get around them.

What is collected, and by whom

Server logs

The site is hosted on Cloudflare's network. Like essentially every web host, Cloudflare records technical request data — IP address, timestamp, the page requested, your browser and operating system — for security, abuse prevention and keeping the service running. We do not use these logs to build profiles, and we do not combine them with anything else. This processing is covered by Cloudflare's privacy policy.

Google Fonts

Pages load the Inter and Poppins typefaces from Google's font servers (fonts.googleapis.com and fonts.gstatic.com). Your browser has to request those files, which means Google receives your IP address and basic request headers. Along with Analytics below, this is one of only two third-party connections any page on this site makes. Google's handling of it is described in the Google privacy policy.

If you would rather avoid it entirely, blocking those two domains in your browser costs you nothing but the fonts — every page is designed to fall back to your system typefaces and remains fully readable and functional.

Google Analytics 4

GA4 records which pages are viewed, roughly where in the world the visit came from, and what kind of device and browser you used. Your IP address reaches Google as part of that, which is how the country is worked out. We use it for one thing: seeing which explanations people actually reach, so the weak ones can be improved. We do not look at individuals, and the reports do not let us.

IP anonymisation is enabled, and Google Signals and ad personalisation are both turned off, so the data cannot be fed into advertising profiles. We do not have, and cannot obtain, your identity from it. Google's own handling is covered by the Google privacy policy.

Google Search Console

Search Console shows us which search queries lead here and whether pages have indexing problems. It works from Google's own crawl and search logs, sets nothing on your device, and reports only aggregate figures. Nothing about an individual visitor is involved.

If you use the contact form

The contact form posts your name, email address, chosen subject, the optional page reference and your message to this site, which passes them to Resend, our email delivery provider, to turn into an email. We do not store submissions in a database — the message lands in a mailbox and lives there.

We keep it for as long as it stays useful: to reply to you, and for corrections, to fix the site. Your address is used to answer you and nothing else. We do not add you to any list. Ask us to delete the thread and we will.

The form also checks a hidden field and how long the form took to fill, to screen out bots. Neither is stored and neither tells us anything about you.

Interactive tools

The simulator, calculator, spectrum explorer and quiz all run entirely in your browser. Nothing you enter into them — slider positions, calculator inputs, quiz answers, your score — is transmitted anywhere or stored between visits. Reloading the page discards all of it.

Where the UK GDPR and EU GDPR apply, the lawful bases are:

  • Legitimate interests for analytics: understanding which pages are read, in aggregate, so the site can be improved. The processing is limited to that, ad personalisation and Google Signals are switched off, and you can object to it at any time with the Opt out button, which takes effect immediately and permanently on that browser.
  • Legitimate interests for the rest: serving and securing the site, and replying to people who choose to write to us.

We should be straight with you about one thing. Storing a cookie on your device is the kind of processing that UK and EU ePrivacy rules generally expect prior consent for, and analytics here is opt-out rather than opt-in. If you would rather it had been opt-in, the Opt out button gives you exactly that outcome in one click, and we honour it permanently.

Your rights

Under the UK and EU GDPR you have the right to access the personal data we hold about you, to have it corrected or erased, to restrict or object to processing, and to receive it in a portable form. In practice, the only personal data we are likely to hold is an email you sent us.

To exercise any of these rights, email info@transversewaves.com. We will respond within one month. If you are unhappy with how we handle it, you may complain to your national data protection authority — in the UK, the Information Commissioner's Office.

If you are in California, the CCPA gives you similar rights to know, delete and opt out of the sale of personal information. We do not sell personal information and never have.

Children

This site is aimed at students, including those under 13, which is exactly why it carries no advertising, no profiling and no ad personalisation of any kind — the analytics here counts page views and nothing more, and it can be switched off in one click. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If a child has emailed us and a parent or guardian would like that message deleted, write to info@transversewaves.com and it will be removed.

Pages sometimes link to other websites — references, institutions, source material. Once you follow one of those links you are on someone else's site, under their privacy policy, and this one no longer applies.

Changes to this policy

If the site ever starts doing something that changes this picture — adding advertising, for instance, or a second analytics provider — this page will be updated before that happens, and the "last updated" date at the top will change. There is no version history to consult; the page above is always the current policy.
